MADISON, Ohio -- When Kevin and Don Jacobson were boys, they played in Griswold Creek just east of state Route 528 in rural Madison, Ohio. They’d find crawfish and snakes as well as simple fossils from the Devonian Period near the shale-lined creek.

Now that they’re men, the fossils are back.

In early November, they opened Fossil Creek Wine overlooking the waterway. They named it, of course, for their childhood experiences in the crooked creek that rushes through a small ravine.

Fossil Creek Wine joins about 30 wineries already open in the Grand River Valley appellation. The closest winery is just across the road – Grand River Cellars.

The Jacobson’s own and operate Custom Moulding and Millwork in Madison. Kevin bought the property in the 1997 and started growing corn there. In 2013, he and Don put in drainage tile and planted their first Riesling grapes.

They chose Riesling because the grapes grow well in the Grand River Valley soils and climate. So, they planted three acres of vines on their 14-acre plot.
