Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina

Thinking about dipping your paddle into the world of kayaking for the first time? You’re not alone—and in the right place! Our local Lake County resident and kayaking enthusiast, Kim Lunardi, shared their top advice for beginners looking to get started on the water, along with what they love most about living and exploring in Lake County.

Kim Lundardi Kayaking in Lake County

New to Kayaking? Start Simple.

“If you’ve never kayaked before,” Kim suggests, “I recommend three things: find a place that rents the gear (don’t buy a kayak before you try it), go with a buddy or a guide, and start out on flat, easy water. Also, remember that you need energy to paddle back. So don’t go crazy far before you know your limits!”

Sound advice. Kayaking might seem simple at a glance, but knowing your limits and building up confidence on calm waters makes for a much more enjoyable first-time experience.

When it comes to weekend plans, Kim makes it a point to be outside—no matter the season. “I get outside most weekends, year-round,” Kim says. “Whether it’s one of the many trails in Lake Metroparks, Headlands Beach State Park, or playing tourist in one of the many quaint towns, I love to explore outside.”

Their sense of curiosity and appreciation for the natural world is clear—and totally contagious. So what is it about Lake County that keeps locals inspired and always exploring?

“What I love most about Lake County is that it has something for everyone,” Kim says. “Outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking, opportunities to explore the vast history of the region, great food—from the taco trail to Bistro 70—and even wine country in Madison. If you’re bored in Lake County, well, that’s on you. Haha!

Whether you're looking for your first paddle, a scenic trail, or a spot to grab a bite after exploring—Lake County has it all!

Our Top 4 Kayaking Locations

Chagrin River

The Chagrin River flows through parts of Lake County, including Willoughby Hills and Kirtland. While it has sections with varying levels of current, it offers peaceful paddling in many areas, especially in its wooded and rural stretches. It’s suitable for both beginners and those looking for a bit of adventure.

Kim Says, “You kayak through neighborhoods and it's usually pretty festive and lively along the banks. There are some quiet spots too and it's so beautiful through the little inlets.”

Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park

Located near the Fairport Harbor Lighthouse, this area offers access to the lake and features calmer water, making it an excellent spot for kayaking.

Grand River Landing Park

The Grand River is a popular spot for kayaking and canoeing in Lake County. The river flows through Painesville and offers a mix of calm waters and mild rapids, making it an excellent spot for kayaking.

Kim Says, “Grand River Landing Park (no rentals available) in Fairport Harbor because of the diversity you see along the Grand River in this section. You go from quiet, wildlife viewing, to the party atmosphere of the marinas and Pickle Bills, then through the industrial side before you paddle into Lake Erie.”

Mentor Headlands Beach State Park

This park offers access to Lake Erie and is a great spot for kayaking. The calm waters near the shore make it an ideal location for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
