Preserving History: Joughin Hardware

Joughin Hardware was founded in 1877 by John Joughin, who came from the Isle of Man to install plumbing and heating for General Jack Casement. The Joughin family has owned the store for four generations, most recently under the leadership of Jeff Joughin, who retired in 2021.

"The Joughin family were friends with my family, so when I was fourteen, I came in and asked for a job," said current owner Doug Wilber. "I started working a couple of hours a day and then on Saturdays, sweeping floors and stocking shelves."

As Doug continued working at the store, he discovered a passion for helping people and interacting with customers. When Jeff decided to retire, Doug purchased the store and carried on the Joughin legacy. "Generations of Painesville families have been coming to this store for help and advice, and some customers just come in to take a walk down memory lane, with its creaking hardwood floors and tin ceilings," Doug shared.

Joughin Hardware has been an integral part of Painesville's history. It continues to welcome both locals and visitors with a unique blend of hardware essentials and nostalgic charm.
